Dawn of Freedom / صبح آزادی

January 2019

Dawn of Freedom / صبح آزادی is an audiovisual piece about the Partition of India, 1947.

EXHIBIT IN SAN FRANCISCO

January 2019 - February 2019
At Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts part of Post Colonial Revenge

At midnight, August 14/15th 1947, a radio station (Radio Pakistan) came into existence at the same moment that the British rule in India ended and India broke into Pakistan and India. This audiovisual piece juxtaposes the first broadcast by Radio Pakistan: the (nationalist) announcement about the creation of Pakistan, with a poem by Faiz Ahmad Faiz, legendary socialist Urdu poet, who describes the disillusionment, pain and anguish brought on by this same dawn; the partition of India.

Audio: Mustafa Ali Hamdani’s announcement on Radio Pakistan & Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s ‘Subh e Azaadi’ read by Naseeruddin Shah

Translation: Mostly adapted from Modern South Asia - Sugata Bose & Ayesha Jalal
